Cycling can deliver days full of joy and success, but also difficult moments. Today was unfortunately one of those days for UAE Team ADQ at the Vuelta a Burgos Féminas.
Stage 3 of the Spanish race, a 126-kilometre route from Busto de Bureba to Medina de Pomar, was heavily affected by a crash with around 20 kilometres remaining that took the team out of contention for the stage victory.
On a long and fast downhill section, with UAE Team ADQ perfectly positioned at the front of the peloton while chasing the breakaway riders, television images from the race helicopter showed contact between two riders at the head of the group. One rider went down, causing another rider behind to crash heavily moments later.
Among the riders involved were Dominika Włodarczyk and Megan Jastrab. The Polish rider was able to remount and, despite being in pain, managed to finish the stage. American rider Megan Jastrab was immediately transported to hospital for further medical examinations.
Both riders remained conscious at all times and neither lost consciousness. UAE Team ADQ will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available from the team’s medical staff.
As for the sporting result, the stage was won by Mischa Bredewold of Team SD Worx – Protime, while her teammate Lorena Wiebes finished third and retained the leader’s jersey.
