Stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia Women featured the much-anticipated 12.7-kilometre uphill individual time trial from Belluno to Nevegal.
It proved to be a challenging day for UAE Team ADQ leader Elisa Longo Borghini, who was unable to perform at her usual level and finished eighth on the stage, 1:51 behind the winner.
The stage victory and the red jersey went to Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen (Team SD Worx – Protime), who completed the course in 31:38. World time trial champion Marlen Reusser (Movistar Team) finished second at 1:04, while Demi Vollering (FDJ United – SUEZ) was third at 1:10.
Following today’s result, Longo Borghini now sits eighth in the general classification, also 1:51 behind Van der Breggen.
The race continues tomorrow with Stage 5, a demanding 146-kilometre route from Longarone to Santo Stefano di Cadore, another challenging day that is expected to test the peloton.
