Lara Gillespie sixth place at the Ronde van Brugge

After a day marked by extreme weather conditions, Lara Gillespie secured an impressive sixth place at the Ronde van Brugge – Tour of Bruges, a renewed Women’s WorldTour race featuring a 143.7 km route starting and finishing in Bruges.

The race began under harsh conditions, with strong winds, rain, cold temperatures, and even some sleet affecting the peloton. As the afternoon progressed, the sun briefly appeared and temperatures rose slightly, but the wind continued to play a decisive role throughout the race.

The peloton remained tightly controlled, with a consistently high pace from start to finish. UAE Team ADQ delivered a superb collective performance, with Brodie Chapman, Megan Jastrab, Febe Jooris, Sofie van Rooijen, and Elynor Bäckstedt doing an outstanding job at the head of the group, working tirelessly to protect and position team leader Lara Gillespie.

With 43 kilometres to go, the race was hit by a sudden and intense storm of rain and hail. The severe conditions, combined with strong pressure applied by UAE Team ADQ, caused the peloton to split. Despite the selection, most of the top contenders managed to remain in the front group.

In the closing kilometres, the focus shifted to sprint preparation, with teams organizing their lead-outs for the final dash. However, just before the final kilometre, Elynor Bäckstedt was involved in a crash following contact with another rider. The incident disrupted several sprint trains and affected the dynamics of the finale.

In a surprising outcome, victory went to young British rider Carys Lloyd of Movistar Team, while Lara Gillespie powered to a strong sixth place, capping off a resilient performance in extremely challenging conditions.
