Despite yesterday’s unfortunate crash and being left with only three riders in the race, UAE Team ADQ once again showed determination and fighting spirit during the fourth and final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas.
The stage covered 120 kilometres from Gumiel de Mercado to the iconic summit finish at Lagunas de Neila, where the general classification battle came to life on the demanding final climb.
One of the protagonists of the day was young Italian talent Federica Venturelli, who delivered an aggressive and courageous performance in the breakaway.
The first rider to attack, with around 100 kilometres remaining, was Spanish national champion Sara Martín (Movistar Team). Venturelli countered from the peloton shortly afterwards, bridging across with 95 kilometres to go. The two riders joined forces at 78 kilometres from the finish and quickly built a strong advantage, extending their lead to more than six minutes over the peloton.
With excellent cooperation, the leading duo stayed clear until just before the start of the decisive final ascent, when the teams of the GC contenders increased the pace to close the gap.
On the steep slopes of Lagunas de Neila, the favourites for the overall classification battled for both the stage victory and the final standings. French rider Maeva Squiban remained with the leading group for most of the climb before losing slight contact in the final section, eventually securing a strong sixth place on the stage.
The stage victory, as well as the overall classification of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas, went to Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck).
