Elisa Longo Borghini finished sixth in Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia Women, managing the race with control and confidence, thanks in large part to the excellent teamwork, especially from Silvia Persico in the final kilometers.
The stage, 92 km from Clusone to Aprica, was decided by a breakaway of two riders, with Anna Henderson taking the win. The group of GC contenders, including Longo Borghini, crossed the line 26 seconds later.
Longo Borghini remains third in the General Classification, 31 seconds behind the new maglia rosa, Anna Henderson, and 16 seconds behind Marlen Reusser.
Silvia Persico delivered a remarkable performance, staying with the lead group until just under one kilometer to go. She led the group for most of the final climb, setting the pace to support her team leader.
It was an unlucky day for the team overall. Greta Marturano was forced to abandon the race following a heavy crash and is currently in hospital for medical checks. Erica Magnaldi was also involved in an incident, but fortunately escaped without serious consequences.
