Abigail Miller sprinted to a strong fifth-place finish for UAE Development Team at Dwars door Wingene in Belgium, after an impressive team performance throughout the 138.6-kilometre race.
Held on a circuit around the town of Wingene, the race was animated by an early breakaway featuring UAE Development Team’s Magdalena Leis. Fresh from winning the European Under-23 Team Pursuit title on the track in Cottbus, the German rider joined five other competitors in the day’s main escape.
The six-rider break worked well together but was eventually reeled in by the peloton with around 30 kilometres remaining. Among the teams that contributed most to the chase was Cofidis Women Team, whose efforts paid off as Italy’s Martina Alzini claimed victory in the bunch sprint.
After spending much of the day on the attack, Leis still had enough left to deliver a strong lead-out for Miller in the closing metres. The British rider finished fifth in the final sprint, rounding off a solid collective performance for UAE Development Team.
