#EuroRoad24: Gasparrini bronze medalist in WU23 Road Race

September 13, 2024

Eleonora Gasparrini today won the bronze medal in the Women's Under-23 Road Race at the Cycling European Championships.

Eleonora Gasparrini today won the bronze medal in the Women's Under-23 Road Race at the Cycling European Championships being held in Belgium.

After 101.4 km from Heusden-Zolder to Hasselt, the UAE Team ADQ rider, competing in the Italian national team jersey, finished third in the sprint won by Dutchwoman Sofie Van Rooijen ahead of compatriot Scarlett Souren.

Having cancelled the breakaway that characterised almost the entire day, the peloton organised itself for the final sprint. Good work by the Italian team, which had to surrender to the superiority of the Netherlands.

Also in the race were UAE Development Team youngsters Carlotta Cipressi and Sara Fiorin, who contributed to the excellent result of their Italian teammate.

Eleonora Gasparrini said after winning the bronze medal: “I am certainly very happy about this medal because I can say that it was not exactly the perfect course for my characteristics, a bit too flat. I prefer slightly harder courses. But I knew I could play my cards, we knew that the Netherlands were a very strong team and that they had the strongest sprinter, so we tried to do our best. We rode together as a team and even in the finale my teammates did very well. Credit to the Netherlands who were better than us. I have to say thank you to my teammates and all the staff. This result testifies that my physical condition is good and now I am thinking about the next commitments with my team and already on Sunday I will be competing in Stuttgart”.

A few days ago Eugenia Bujak (Slovenia) had come eighth in the ITT, while yesterday Karolina Kumiega with Poland came fourth in the Mixed Relay TTT.
