Mavi Garcia makes history, for the fourth time she is Spanish Champion
Mavi Garcia writes the history of Spanish cycling and becomes the first female cyclist ever to win four national road race titles at the Spanish National Championships, something no one had ever managed to do before.
It is the third consecutive one, the same thing she had already managed to do yesterday with the conquest of the fourth national ITT title.
Undoubtedly, the victory obtained today, at the age of 38, at the end of the 136.5 km competition, has a special flavour for the UAE Team ADQ rider. Because it was won on her home roads of Palma de Mallorca, with the cheers and enthusiasm of her people, along the roads that have seen her grow and train over the years and at the end of more than 80 kilometres of breakaway.
At the start of the race, Mavi Garcia had to defend herself against repeated attacks from her rivals. Then the Spaniard went on the attack at the start of the Camí de Sant Jordi climb and with her Ane Santesteban escaped. After 80 kilometres of the race, her rival succumbed to the acceleration of her breakaway companion and also a mechanical problem definitively launched the solo action of Mavi Garcia, who increasingly increased her lead. With the gap now unbridgeable, the last lap of the Palma circuit was a great celebration for the local cyclist, who garnered the affection of the many cycling fans on the island of Mallorca and crossed the finish line all alone with 3:12 on Sandra Alonso, Iurani Blanco and the other members of the first chasing group.
After this new extraordinary success Mavi Garcia said: “I’m very very happy because this race was very complicated at the beginning and I knew that Movistar Team and other teams wanted to get into a breakaway before the longest climb which came after 90 kilometres. It was not easy to control the race today. So I tried an attack with Ane Sentesteban, but when I realised that she was not feeling well I decided to go away alone even though there was still a long way to go, but I wanted to win, I felt strong today and I did it. I unleashed watts like never before in my life, but I’m happy with how it went”.
